I had to go unplug the alarm clock (w/ radio) and bring it into the living room. These chuckleheads providing commentary on TV are especially stupid tonight, and don’t even deserve to be named. Someone like Dan Deirdorf f can make the mute button an option for me, but over time I’ve been able to develop a callus for the Gumbel/Simms tandem and a few others. As the NFL encores following a day of college games, the heady commentary slowly dies throughout Sunday, on dialysis by the 8:30 ESPN game and six feet under by halftime Monday night.
Patrick Pass broke a few runs and took a five yard pass for twenty yards, so the title phrase is spoken. Not that I have anything against Patrick Pass. In fact, he’s one of my favorite players. It’s the way these commentators sound like used car salesmen, with 75 percent of the insight coming in the form of stats, montages and scripted anecdotes on whatever player made the last good play.
A football game, this American creation that’s just naturally dripping with material from play to play to riff on, is cheaply dressed up and pimped out. There’s a reason why NFL Films only uses clips from the radio coverage. It wouldn’t work with a soundtrack of, “here’s why you like this guy who just made a play, here’s why you like this guy who just made a play, here’s why you like this guy who just made a play, here’s why you like this guy who just made a play…”

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. George W. Bush said Tuesday that he would have voted to impeach President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
“I would have voted for it. I thought the man lied,” he said in response to a question posed during a news conference.

She’s got nothing to say in terms of her reporting in the runup to the war. It’s he-said/she-said…I’m posting this because I honestly feel that this woman just doesn’t get it. He’s just not that good of a quarterback. All day long he failed to move in the pocket, and consistently made terrible throws. While I heavily questioned the Cowboys play calling throughout the game (after the Seattle turnover on the punt, why run it on third and 5 inside the 10?), Bledsoe has to know at this point in his career what balls he can and cannot through in certain situations. On the pick that set up Seattle’s game winning field goal, Bledsoe’s receiver on the far right ran a fifteen yard out with one defender in man to man coverage and another playing zone in the exact spot the ball would have to go. Drew doesn’t need to see the tape, doesn’t need ‘coaching’, doesn’t need to beat himself up over it…he just needs to go away. Anyone who doesn’t think Parcells is kicking himself for taking Bledsoe over Jeff Garcia, Mark Brunell or Kelly Holcomb is in denial!

As U.S. attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald’s two-year investigation into the CIA leak case reportedly draws to a close, the long-standing debate over the origins of the scandal, the merits of the federal investigation, and the legal authority of the prosecutor has intensified greatly. At issue is the disclosure to the press of the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame, which first appeared in syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak’s July 14, 2003, column. Bush administration officials allegedly leaked her identity in order to discredit her husband, former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, a vocal critic of the White House’s decision to go to war with Iraq.
In this rhetorical environment characterized by limited information and boundless speculation, those defending the officials at the center of Fitzgerald’s probe have advanced numerous falsehoods and distortions. As Media Matters for America documents below, the media have not only failed to challenge many of these claims, but also repeated them.

Also, it is very important that time is allowed for Mr. Brown to eat dinner. Gievn that Baton Rouge is back to normal, restaurants are getting busy. He needs much more that 20 or 30 minutes. We now have traffic to encounter to get to and from a location of his choise, followed by wait service from the restaurant staff, eating, etc. Thank you.

While I’m sure Bush will get away with unloading as many weapons for the effort as he can, I have a serious problem with the idea of committing US troops to a war in Syria. Listen to the reports coming from military analysts concerning Iraq. It’s years we’re talking about here before they hope the Iraqis can start to take over certain areas. We’re finding out what the Soviets found out in Afghanistan. What makes anybody think we’re going to get it right the third time?
This is none of our business.

The message from Democrats has to exceed all of our expectations, and based on their level of outrage on issues like Iraq, the VA and budget defecits…my underwhelmed impression so far has nowhere to go but up. If the Democratic Party was a traded stock, speculative investors would be getting in right now expecting a bounce. This analogy is apt when you consider what makes two stocks in the same sector different. Effeciency, superior product lines and most importantly strong forward-looking leadership are what seperates a winner from the rest of the pack.
Unlike business though, in politics it’s not what you’re selling as much as how you go about it. In my opinion, the greatest downfall of Republican leadership during Bush’s presidency has been their lack of independant leadership. The organization is run from the top down, and with that type of a business model you’re gambling that whoever’s calling the shots knows what they’re doing. Clearly, this strategy has backfired, as John McCain looks more like a hero amongst lemmings every day for simply doing his job.
An opportunity for Democrats to grab up a larger share of the market lies in how they describe this dynamic to the voters. The Republicans set up a system where Senators and Representatives were expected to vote as they were told to vote. When they appeared on talk shows or CSPAN, the RNC talking points were repeated over and over. So voters who thought they were electing a candidate, were in fact electing a political party. The elected politician answered to the party first, and their constituents second.
Pointing this fact out to voters will win Democrats seats in 2006. A textbook example of someone who cannot win versus this strategy is Rick Santorum. This Senator is as much of a rubber stamp as there is in Congress, and when the public clearly feels that the country is going in the wrong direction, exposing the people who let it happen without a fight is key.

From the Financial Times. This is the guy who came out against John Bolton during his confirmation hearing. High-level military officers know how to keep a secret, but they’re also USA to the bone. The crackerjack patriotism America is so absorbed with doesn’t have nearly the depth. Most of us think of a ‘military career’ as 20 tough years, but not these people. When they speak out like Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson has here, it’s difficult to pin down a ‘nuh-uh’.
Vice-President Dick Cheney and a handful of others had hijacked the government’s foreign policy apparatus, deciding in secret to carry out policies that had left the US weaker and more isolated in the world, the top aide to former Secretary of State Colin Powell claimed on Wednesday.
