You can't really do much when you have higher ranks covering up the truth. I'm interested to know if they allow soldiers internet access so they can keep in contact back home (highly doubtful because of secretive signals). Surely there must be some trust involved in the team.

That the soldiers were overtaken isn't the most troubling thing to me, but that their unit had no idea where they went! I'm not in Iraq...but four soldiers clumped together being far enough away for this to happen seems like a bad idea. If that was the plan, it only adds to the reality that the job is too large for our military to handle. If the mission requires a spreading out of resources like that...

This should be investigated by Congress. Not the coverup, but how it happened. Maybe this was the SOP for so long that the enemy was able to plan this out for a while. If so, then who decided to start spliting off small groups like that? Who in the chain of command approved that? Get them in front of the panel, and ask questions about the justification.

If the officer who approved this tactic felt like he had no other choice but to adapt in a way that made the soldiers less safe, then we can assume he's not an idiot, but simply forced to do too much with not enough resources to do it with.

These aspects of the war are what will educate Congress and the public more than anything else in my opinion. Simply calling the top generals in and beating up on them a bit...doesn't do anything for the grunt on the ground. Congress has the right to call anyone they want to testify, and they also have the power to ensure that whatever testimony is given doesn't put a black mark on whoever testifies. It just takes work and followup. The top brass isn't happy with the revealing of this or that, but what this soldier or officer is providing with their testimony will benefit their people more than anything Gates or Pace have to say!

Yeah, when I heard about the kidnapping and murder I was sick. Having been x-military, I am confused how this happened. But it did, and the government lies about it at first. I fed up with the lies.

[...] (Original Post w/ Pictures) The US military just can’t help themselves when it comes to troops being killed. They lied about Pat Tillman’s death, and here’s another example: “Contrary to U.S. military statements, four U.S. soldiers did not die repelling a sneak attack at the governor’s office in the Shiite holy city of Karbala last week. New information obtained by The Associated Press shows they were abducted and found dead or dying as far as 25 miles away.“ Perhaps it’s out of shame or embarassment, but there is something that plays into this urge to supress the truth rather than deal with what these events actually mean. Is it so unbelievable that our enemy could kidnap four of our soldiers, drive away, kill them and never be caught? Or is that fact something we can live with, as long as the public doesn’t hear about it? I think the latter is right on, and the sad truth is that any number of US soldiers could be kidnaped, killed and then dumped on the side of the road like these four were, and to the bosses it wouldn’t cause anything a swig of peptol bismol wouldn’t fix.
